In a nail biting game that was evenly matched down to the very end, Marion Middle School boys’ basketball team was narrowly defeated 35-34 by Moundridge Thursday in the Heart of America League championship game at Inman.
Moundridge came out to an early lead of 8-4 by the end of the first quarter.
Marion scored two points early in the second quarter but Moundridge answered by causing several turnovers and converting them into baskets. Both teams fouled each other and scored off free throws but at halftime Moundridge still led 19-12.
Teams swapped baskets during the third quarter during which Marion gained momentum with a six-point run that tied the game at 28.
In the fourth quarter, Marion promptly scored two points but Moundridge made a 3-pointer to bring the score to 31-30. Teams traded baskets and with 1:24 left in the game Marion scored again to lead the game 34-33.
Moundridge scored made a free throw to tie the game at 34 and with less than a second left in the game, and Marion fouled again, from which Moundridge made one of two free throws to win the game.
Lady Wildcats play for third
The Lady Wildcats won against Berean with a final score of 31-33 to claim third place in the girl’s portion of the HOA league basketball tournament Thursday at Inman.
