A 2009 Mitsubishi Galant crossed the center line of US-77 near the Marion-Dickinson line Sunday morning and hit an oncoming tanker truck, killing the car’s driver, 19-year-old Sally Rowell of El Dorado.
The accident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. five miles south of Herington.
“The car was thrown over in the west ditch and the semi jackknifed and came to rest on the east side,” sergeant Mike Ottensmeier said. “There was a fireball on impact.”
The driver of the tanker, Tommy Tibbets, 45, El Dorado, reportedly pulled Rowell out of the Galant as it was burning. He was transported to Herington Municipal Hosptial with unspecified injuries.
Ottensmeier said the tank trailer itself did not rupture, but flames fed by fuel from both vehicles’ gas tanks burned ditches on both sides of the road for about 800 feet north of the scene.
