28-year-old Wichita resident reportedly driving stolen GMC

A Wichita woman was arrested Tuesday after leading police more than 29 miles from Hillsboro to north of Walton.

The chase started at 11:10 a.m. as she drove between Hillsboro and eastern Harvey County.

Rebekah D. Hurd, 28, Wichita, started driving west on US-56 in a stolen 2006 GMC Envoy, then headed south on K-15 toward Harvey County.

Officers and deputies from Harvey and Marion counties converged on the area, driving parallel to K-15 to get in front of the stolen vehicle. They deployed stop sticks at the county line on K-15 to stop the Envoy, but Hurd turned east before running over them.

After driving down county roads, Hurd surrendered just north of Walton, Hillsboro police chief Dan Kinning said.

“Turning down random roads is tough,” he said. “The only good thing there is that they don’t know their way either. If they’re not

familiar with it, they’re more likely to give up or end up at a dead end.”

She was arrested on suspicion of eluding police possession of stolen property and drug paraphernalia, and counterfeiting. According to Marion County jail log, she had 1,000 counterfeit bills in her possession.

While the vehicle’s tag number was what tipped police off that the Envoy was stolen, they found minor amounts of what Kinning said might be methamphetamine, and items that might have been stolen in Hillsboro.

The vehicle was reported stolen out of Wichita on March 27.
