Writer is published
in Chicken Soup series
Staff writer
Jennifer Broadstreet Hess of Marion has a featured story in Amy Newark’s latest book in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.
This book focuses on pets and includes 101 personal short stories from different writers about more than 20 different types of pets — snakes, pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits, etc.
“I have worked for four years to get published in a Chicken Soup for the Soul book,” Hess said. “It is a dream come true.”
Each story is limited to 1,000 words, so they make for quick reads.
Her contribution, “Hot Spot,” is about how planting catmint bought from a local nursery has attracted cats to her garden.
The cats seem to love its smell and often lie nearby, she said. Catmint is closely related to catnip, she found.
Hess had a book-signing Saturday at Marion City Library. She was pleased with the turnout and sold 27 books.
The 332-page softcover includes short biographies of each of the contributors. It is available wherever books are sold.
Her long-term dream has been to become a full-time writer.
She has been a field editor for Bird and Blooms magazine for five years and is kitchen editor for Good Old Days magazine.
More than 35 of her stories have been published in national magazines, including two chosen by Reader’s Digest for its 2022 travel books.
