Wuest’s 5 threes not enough for Goessel

A week that began with victories Feb. 1 over Centre ended with losses Friday to Elyria Christian in a competitive game for the boys and a blowout for the girls.
Boys
Despite a second-best 20 points and five three-pointers from Skyler Wuest, turnovers and missed free-throws doomed the boys’ chances at home Friday against one of the best teams in the Wheat State League.
Goessel grabbed a one-point lead midway through the second period but trailed 19-16 by halftime.
Wuest swished two guarded threes from the left corner in the third quarter and Tim Schrag added a three, but the Bluebird deficit grew to 32-27 by the end of the period.
Elyria led by as many as nine points early in the fourth quarter, but scoring from Jacob Schrag and Wuest cut the Eagle lead to four points before Goessel went on to lose, 44-38.
The Bluebirds hit just 20% of their free-throws.
After Wuest, Caiden Duerksen and Tim Schrag were the next leading scorers with five apiece.
Girls
Elyria dominated the girls’ game at Goessel, jumping out to a 21-3 in the first quarter, expanding the lead to 32-7 at half and to 47-17 after the third quarter.
Playing the fourth quarter with running clock, Elyria scored 10 more, but the Bluebirds did not score again, leaving the final score 57-17.
Jaicee Griffin led Goessel’s scoring with five. Emily Flaming and Lyna Lehrman had four each.
