Marion city clerk resigns

Marion City Clerk Angela Lange gave notice of her resignation to the city the afternoon of Dec. 19. City Administrator Roger Holter said Lange will work through the end of the year. Lange’s written notice didn’t say why she was resigning, but she did say she will seek a career outside government, Holter said.

Beef is Christmas gift to seniors

An empty freezer at the September 1 apartment building was filled with early Christmas gifts for residents Wednesday. While the beef that was loaded into the freezer was not wrapped in the traditional colorful paper and bows, it will certainly help the residents who struggle putting food on their table over the next year. Because of the program called Beef for Seniors, residents will have access to the freezer filled with a side beef for meals all year round.

Marion chamber elects board members

Kevin Fruechting and Linda Carlson were reelected to the Marion Chamber of Commerce board of directors Friday, and Karen Williams was elected to fill a vacancy left by Doug Regnier. Margo Yates told chamber members about this year’s Community Christmas project. Donations were down and requests were up, but it still went OK, she said. The Kansas Food Bank gave 100 turkeys, and Carlsons’ Grocery made a large donation.

Christmas cards take winding path

Marion County sits at the intersection of the territories of three U.S. Postal Service sectional centers. This results in some in-county mail taking circuitous routes to its destination. Kansas City, Mo., serves most of the eastern half of the county, with ZIP codes starting with 668. Wichita serves Hillsboro, Goessel, and Lehigh, with ZIP codes beginning with 670. And Tampa, Durham, and Ramona’s mail is processed in Salina, with the other ZIP codes beginning with 674.

Shopping Spree winners announced

Peabody City Clerk Stephanie Ax did the honors at 2 p.m. Friday and drew out the winning tickets in Peabody’s 2013 Holiday Shopping Spree. The first-place winner for $700 was Sonya Koslowsky, second place winner for $400 was Kelly Penner, and third place winner for $100 was Bessie Michaelis.

I just finished baking some Ooey-Gooey Squares for you and I got fresh milk at Peabody Market today to be sure there is something available with which you can wash down the squares if you need to. They do come from my kitchen, after all, and I know that asking you to eat treats at my house is asking a great deal. However, I am trying to expand my culinary talents and I hope you enjoy them! Thank you for all the wishes you made come true in 2012 for the boys and girls in Marion County. I am sure they were pleased to receive the gifts you left for them.

Bill Holdeman to turn 90

Bill Holdeman of Marion will turn 90 on Thursday. He was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Rich Hill, Mo. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and has been a barber for about 60 years.

Dahl appointed to nominating commission

Hillsboro native Don Dahl was appointed Thursday to serve the remainder of the late Janet Juhnke’s unexpired term on the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Commission. The nominating commission presents Gov. Sam Brownback with a group of three candidates whenever a vacancy opens. Dahl served with the U.S. Navy and Kansas House of Representatives.

Hymn sing will be New Years Eve

A special hymn sing will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. The event will include singing, scripture reading, and prayer. Those attending should bring their favorite hymn suggestions. The nights theme will be “Looking in Three Directions,” and led by Steve Vincent. The service will be followed by a light supper and dessert.

Local students named to Washburn honor roll

When Washburn University released the names of students named to the fall semester dean’s honor roll, Meghan Leihy of Hillsboro and Jordan Timm of Marion made the list. To make the list, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, and maintain a grade point average between 3.4 and 3.99 for the semester.

FFA meal to include Call Hall ice cream

The Hillsboro FFA Alumni Chapter is having a meal Jan. 3 at the school’s home basketball games against Marion. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. in the commons area. Meals will include sloppy joe, chips, pickles, and Kansas State University Call Hall ice cream and a drink for $5.

Marion boys' basketball wins up-and-down game

It was a game of momentum Thursday night between Marion and Canton-Galva, the Warriors creating and losing a 17-point lead before taking final control in the fourth quarter. “It was a crazy turn of events,” head coach Jeff McMillin said. “We dominated the first quarter, then they dominated to get back in the game, actually took a lead.”

Lady Warriors earn solid win against Eagles

The Marion High School girls’ basketball team never trailed against Canton-Galva Thursday, but its biggest lead was only six points, including the final 39-33 score. Head coach Kelly Robson said the girls’ growing confidence was evident in the win.

Wrestling teams have mixed results at Winter Duals

After wrestling five of the 16 teams competing in the Marion County Winter Duals tournament Friday at USD 408 Sports and Aquatic Center, Marion wrestlers took seventh as a team. At 3-2 for the night, Marion finished the tournament with a winning record and placed one-step higher than they did at the same event last year.

The Centre boys’ and girls’ basketball teams rolled over Elyria Christian Tuesday on the road in the first league games of the season. The boys defeated the Eagles 69-34.

Peabody-Burns comes back, wins at buzzer

A last-second 3-point shot by Vince Newman earned the Peabody-Burns High School Warriors a victory Dec. 17 at Burrton Tuesday. The team came back from a 14-point halftime deficit, ultimately winning 57-56. The PBHS offense scored 12 points in the first quarter, but Burrton had 19. Newman led the Warriors’ scoring with a 3-pointer and a 2-point basket. Braxton Kyle had three from the free-throw line. Xavier Jabary and Garret Schroeder each added 2.

All-tournament honors at Marion Classic

All-tournament honors at Marion Classic Nick Preheim, Xavier Jabary, Braxton Kyle, Jordan Gibson, and Christa Elliott were recognized at the Marion Classic basketball tournament earlier this month. Kyle, Preheim, and Elliott were recognized on the all-academic team, and Elliott, Jabary, and Kyle were on the all-tournament team.
