County Attorney Burkholder and Deputy Sheriff George Hildreth were at Lehigh to attend the trial of one man on a charge of assault. The defendant was sentenced to six months in jail and a fine of $150. On their return to Marion the prisoner who had been permitted to drive, while near the tall corn on the Wible farm near town, jumped from the carriage, threw the lines out and hit the horse a blow, at the same time hiking for the tall corn, where he soon lost himself. Sam sprinted and yelled while George got busy stopping his team but the prisoner — oh, where was he? He was as well hid in that field of corn as he would have been in the forest of Arden. He went hence and is yet an undiscovered quantity.
The way the poultry wagons are buying up the chickens throughout the county, it looks as though the preachers will have mighty poor pickin's this winter when making their pastoral calls among rural members.
An interesting oratorical contest was given at the Baptist church August 28, by eight members of the Loyal Temperance Legion. Those participating in the contest were Leah Bates, Dorothy Billings, Leona Ehrlich, Helen Riddle, Frank McCormick, Max Shippe, Leland Thompson and Milton Kable. The prize, a silver medal, was won by Leah Bates. All the contestants did exceedingly well. Much praise is due Miss Bown for her faithfulness in drilling these young people. Several musical numbers added interest to the program.
Street Commissioner Adkins always finds something to do, and one good job that he did last week was to raise the approaches on the north side of the stone arch bridge so they would be in line with the bridge walk.
On Saturday evening, Miss Mamie Wheeler entertained in compliment of Miss Edith Mansfield, in the parlors of the Elgin Hotel. The affair was in the nature of a silver shower. Progressive Whist was the game of the evening and Miss Mary Mansfield was awarded the prize, a heart shaped pin tray. Refreshments were served in the hotel dining room, the tables being decorated in red hearts. Miss Wheeler extended her invitations to: Misses Mary Mansfield, Angie Mansfield, Edith Mansfield, Mary Watson, Carrie Watson, Hattie Halowell, Mamie Caldwell, Imogene Dean, Gertie Bown, Florence Saggau, Mable Downes, Lola Hoch, Elizabeth Lindsay, Lizzie Bryan, Libbie Powers, Maudie Riggs, Edith Riggs, Frances Riggs, Virgie Donaldson, Pearl Richards, Stella Owens, Mabel Owens, Lucy Mollohan, Annie Trenner, Bessie Yost, Sadie Keller, Myrtle Hodge, Ella Ford, Winnie Carter, Dot Graham, Mary Alexander, Florence, Mable Deibler, Peabody, and Mesdames Daisy Clarkson, Minnie Florer, Uhl, Dodge City, Claud Ball, Webb City, Mo.
William Ambrose, living about seven miles east of town, fell from a horse last Saturday afternoon, breaking the left collarbone. Dr. Hannaford is attending him.

The county commissioners have bought the Bare property, south of George Scott's residence, for $100. This property is included in the site for the new courthouse.
The Marion band will attend the National G.A.R. Reunion in Denver next week. They will accompany the delegation from this place Sunday.
Little Miss Gladys Corn, on Wednesday evening, gave a lawn party in honor of her sixth birthday at her home on Third St. The lawn was beautifully decorated with Japanese lanterns. After an enjoyable evening spent in games refreshments were served, which the little folks enjoyed immensely.
