Torey Hett of Marion participated Saturday and Sunday in Wichita in Challenge '93, a track and field event for physically challenged athletes. And he has six gold medals to prove it.

Christine Laue of Marion has joined the staff of the Omaha World-Herald as a journalism intern this summer. She will be a senior this fall at the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

The annual Biking through Kansas ride will pass through Marion again this year. About 1,000 riders are expected to participate in the June 5-12 ride.

Tim Summervill, Eileen Hett, and Jason Kruse received top honors May 11 at the Marion High School FFA banquet. Summervill was named chapter Star Farmer, Hett was named chapter Star in Agribusiness, and Kruse was named chapter Star Greenhand.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tajchman and Jenna attended graduation exercises Friday at McCain Auditorium of Kansas State University. Jessica Tajchman Laurin received her degree from the School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating cum laude.

Marion native Gary Melcher has been named head basketball coach for the coming year at El Dorado High School. He is the son of Dorothy Melcher of Marion and the late Wilbur Melcher.

Kristen Groening, daughter of Gordon and Shirley Groening, has been selected to received the $600 Catherine Riddle Scholarship for the upcoming school year. A graduating senior at Marion High School, Groening plans to major in architecture at Kansas State University.

Jim Cott, formerly of Lincolnville, has been named April "Hometown Hero" by United Way of Salina.
