Wet was wonderful this week in Marion County. Ponds are full, Marion County Lake spillway poured water and fish into the stream below the dam, and Marion Reservoir came up 3.65 feet. Rains of six inches or more were recorded in much of Marion County during the week.
Cy and L.Dena Goertz will be honored Aug. 9 at a reception in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. Hosts will be their children, Diana and Clint Jost of Burdick and Dave and Jessye Goertz of Bayard, Neb.
The Cottonwood Valley League all-star team finished fourth in the district tournament at Medicine Lodge. Players were Kevin Steiner, Jerod Shipman, Shawn Craft, Stark Kremeier, Ryan Bina, Nolan Brunner, Joey Woods, Tony Leeds, Lance Giesbrecht, Mike Williams, Micah Ratzlaff, Alex Utting, and Lucas Carlson.
Starfire Dance Co. performers won first in their division at a national convention in Dallas. Area girls who are members of the group included Tina Ybarra, Meggan Silhan, Jenny Loveless, Jenaea Ireland, Mindy Strome, and Mandy Hanson.
David Silhan of Marion entered his 1963 Chevy II Nova with 350 cubic inch engine in the Wichita International Raceway drag races Saturday and took eighth place out of 35 drivers entered.
Ken and Linda Philbrick, Burns, were honored July 22 for their heroism in rescuing three people April 25 from a cold and choppy Marion Reservoir. Lifesaving award plaques from the Army Corps of Engineers and personal letters were presented to them in a brief outdoor ceremony.
Members of the Cottonwood Valley all-star baseball team chosen to play Thursday in the tournament at Salina are James Parmley of Florence, who played with Marion I; Matt Helmer and Matt Powers of Marion, who played with Marion II; Seth Post of Burns, and Andy Jacobson of Peabody.
