While a TV cameraman from Wichita videotaped the action, Chef Harry Haller demonstrated a cooking technique to Mary Yates in her home at Durham. Yates won a contest, sponsored by Heinz, USA in which the grand prize was a variety of kitchen appliances, plus a gourmet dinner prepared by the former White House chef. Haller retired in 1987 as executive chef of the White House for almost 22 years and five presidents.
Marion Duckwall's manager Janie Meierhoff presented checks for $260 each to Elora Robinson and Bob Brookens, representing Marion Boy and Girl Scouts. The money came from a "cutest baby" contest held at the store. Winning baby was 12-week-old Janessa Tammen, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Maddox of Elmdale and great-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Kohls, Salina.
Six Centre High School volleyball team members were named to the all-Eisenhower League volleyball team. Jill Brunner, Jennea Falen, and Tina Ybarra were named to the first team. Ramie Bina, Amy Brunner, and Susie Svoboda received honorable mention.
Jim Lehrer's newest fiction novel, "A Bus of My Own," now is available at Marion's City Library. Lehrer lived in Marion in the mid-1940s when his parents operated an area bus line.
Shad Winter, son of Earl and Joan Winter of Marion, recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, and now is stationed at Lowry AFB, Denver, Colo.
