Kevin Weigart, Daniel Bryant, and Matt Bryant received certificates of thanks from Marion County commissioners Linda Peters, Leon Suderman, and Charles DeForest Monday during the commission meeting. The boys performed first aid on Glenn Matthews Nov. 8 after he suffered a heart attack.

Among students at the University of Kansas who recently have been awarded academic scholarships are junior Christine Laue, daughter of Harvey and Betty Sanders; freshman Alan Meisinger, son of Marvin and Maggie Meisinger; freshman Lori Tice, daughter of Martin and Margaret Tice, and junior Kristy Herbel, daughter of Ron and Ruth Herbel, all of Marion.

Janet Post of Burns and Emporia State University professor Dr. Jim Hoy entertained nearly 300 area farmers and ranchers Monday at the annual Farm-City Appreciation Night sponsored by the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Jim McLain, a senior at Marion High School, was chosen student of the month by the high school faculty. The son of Larry and Linda McLain of Marion, Jim has an older brother Larry and an older sister Jennifer.

Cub Scouts of Den 3, Marion, discovered that heavy fire coats were just a little oversized for them during a recent visit to the Marion Fire Department. Scouts Schale Vu, Marion Martinez, Andy Holt, Matt Rhodes, Jason Matz, and James Davis toured the station with leaders Craig Matz and Terry Holt. Firefighter Jim Davis gave a demonstration and showed a video on fire safety.

Twelve Marion Unified School students were honored the past week for academic accomplishment. Recognized for mathematics scores were fifth graders Justin Hett, Mandalee Meisner, and Bill Shearer. Recognized for reading scores were fourth graders Audra Waner and Matt Schuler, eighth graders Molly Hanes, Stacie Hasenbank, and Shawn Markley; and MHS juniors LeAnn Hiebert, Corey Darrow, Danielle Longhofer, and Renee Goodin.
