Linda Graves spent an hour at Marion Elementary School Thursday, meeting students and parents in Ginger Becker's classroom. The original invitation was to Gov. Bill Graves, who was unable to attend because of the legislative session. He asked his wife to attend in his place. Pictured with Graves are Logan Richmond, Calvin Jeffrey, and Bryce Suffield who explained to her how implements are used to prepare fields and harvest crops.

After a week of confusion on the recycling program in Marion, city commissioners and Pure Country Environment came to an agreement. Blue bags will be used for the new drop — off recycling program.

Marion's newest convenience store opened Thursday with little fanfare. Casey's General Store, 1020 E. Main Street, is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

The winter homecoming celebration at Centre High School will begin Friday evening with the crowning of a king and queen following the junior varsity girls' basketball game. Candidates are Emily Belton, Mandy Ryff, Jennifer Backhus, Michelle Hajek, Jay Fenske, Mike Webb, Martin Skitte, and Andre Ebaben.

Marion Elementary School students competed Thursday in the annual school building spelling bee. Tyler Stubenhofer, son of Missy Stubenhofer, finished in first place and Tim Schuler, son of Gary and Mary Schuler, finished in second place. Steven Waner, who was first, and Melissa Moffitt, second, in the Florence Middle School spelling bee, will represent Florence Middle School Feb. 13 at the Marion County Spelling Bee.

Jodi Smith, daughter of Jerry and Lois Smith of Marion, has been listed on the fall semester honor roll at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, where she is majoring in communications.

Virgil and Phyllis Litke will be the featured speakers Sunday evening at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church southeast of Hillsboro. The Litkes, who live southwest of Marion, toured Israel and Jordan in December. They will show slides and tell of experiences in the visit to the Holy Land.
