Recent news about President Richard Nixon's funeral, and the fact that one of his funeral honor guards was former Marionite Steve Seiler, prompted local people to remember they have family connections with one of the men who guarded President Lincoln's body. W.H. Gilbert, grandfather of Lester and Lawrence Gilbert and Verna Gilbert Propp, was one of the men guarding the assassinated president in 1865.

Lost Springs businessman Leslie Kitchenmaster will seek the Democratic nomination for governor, he announced Monday during a press conference in his office. Kitchenmaster said that to be successful, a person must find a need, and fill it.

A Salina architectural firm is at work preparing a master plan for Marion County Lake, including landscaping, campsites, recreational facilities, and a bath house. This is in preparation to seek an Intermodal Surface Transport Efficiency Act which provides up to $5 million dollars for projects through the Kansas Department of Transportation. The grant request will be written by Flint Hills Resource Conservation and Development staff.

The engagement of Kristina Bell and Kevin Burkholder is announced this week by their parents, Kenneth Bell and Carol Bell, both of Douglass, and William and Shirley Burkholder of Marion. The couple plans to be married Aug. 6 at the Marion Christian Church.

Marion High School sent 14 students to the state music festival April 30. They were Renee Goodin, Austin Gilbert, Brian Loomis, Jason Goodin, Courtney Goering, Katrina Hancock, Pam Kruse, Pam Cyr, Josh Wildin, Jenny Groening, Lisa Zogleman, Chris Bowers, Amanda May, and Jessica Ash.

Bertha Hobein of Marion has been notified that her grandson, Randy Lilley, is playing keyboard for noted violinist Shaju Tubuchi, who is one of the most popular performers at Branson, MO.

Kent and Alice Richmond of Country Dreams Bed & Breakfast, Marion, attended the Kansas Bed and Breakfast Association spring meeting April 10-11.
