Kansas State Historical Society will provide $27,000 toward repair of the Marion County Courthouse clock tower. The Heritage Trust Fund helps repair or restore historic structures. The 90-year-old courthouse is on the National Register of Historic places, a federal listing.

Marion County Economic Development Council will have a county website, members decided May 21 at their regular monthly meeting. Diane Hett of Marion and Tracy Isaac of Hillsboro are working on the project.

Sheri Plenert received a master's degree in counselor education from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., May 10. Bob and Karen Ehrlich of Marion, Julie Sparks of Emporia, and Lorie Scott of Hutchinson attended the ceremonies. She has accepted a position at the university.

Friday was the last day of school for most students in Marion Unified School District. For bus driver Leonard Klassen, it also was the end of his two-year stint as district bus driver. Klassen retired Friday after taking a busload of happy elementary school students to their homes for the summer, then loading up a group of high school athletes for a regional track and field meet.

Melvin Hett, son of Joyce and Russell Hett of Florence, has been selected as Criminalogist of the Year for Oklahoma. Hett is the quality assurance and quality control coordinator in the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation crime lab. He is a graduate of Marion High School.

Shawn Markley of Marion received academic and football scholarships at Bethel College in North Newton. The scholarships are valued at $14,000 over four years.

Florence Middle School students receive incentive awards based on citizenship, academics, and responsibility Recent winners include Chase Freeborn, Travis Herzet, Jack Branson, Amanda Fruechting, Rebecca Kukuk, and Ashley Harbison.
