Streets and parking lots around Marion County are paved with gold this week — golden grain. At Cooperative Grain & Supply of Marion more than 600,000 bushels of wheat worth about $400,000 have been received and the total is expected to reach 750,000 bushels. Nearly 100,000 bushels of wheat worth about $300,000 was stored on the parking lot and nearby street. Almost every elevator in the state has been filled to capacity.
Shirley Bowers and her daughters, Bev Jennison, Mary Lou Just, Betsy Bunnel, and Janelle Paden, vacationed this past week in Missouri and Arkansas. They visited the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Mo., saw the Passion Play in Eureka Springs, Ark., and attended many shows in Branson, Mo.
A public hog roast will be held July 19 to raise funds to benefit the shower and restroom project at Marion County Park and Lake. Sponsored by the Marion County Lake Board, the meal will be served at Marion County Lake hall.
Florence United Methodist Church will celebrate is 125th anniversary Aug. 10 with a special worship service, noon meal, afternoon program, an ice cream social, and a tour of the newly-constructed parsonage.
Ed Davies is pictured on the front page as he repairs a damaged lamp located in Central Park along the nature trail. Vandalism of the donated memorial lamps has been a problem since they were installed a few years ago. Davies, a member of Marion Kiwanis, volunteers his time to repair the gas lights and asks the community to join together in an effort to prevent further destruction to the memorial lamps and other items in Central Park.
John Brose of Marion has received recognition among his peers as one of the few "originals" remaining in the retail liquor business in Kansas. A recent issue of the magazine, Beverage News, carried an article about Brose.
