A record of 2,185 books were read by 67 children in the Marion City Library summer reading program. Emmy Bowers read the most with 200, followed by Marlon Martinez with 172, and Molly Rhodes with 120. For each five books read, children received a chance to enter a drawing for free books. Winners were first grade, Eric Steiner; second grade, Rebecca Savage; third grade, Jamie Bernhardt; fourth grade, Becky Taylor; fifth grade, Melissa Moffitt, and sixth grade, Erin O'Dell.

Marion County is mighty proud of Carla Stovall, Republican candidate for attorney general in the Kansas primary. She conducted a clean campaign and won the nomination.

John and Mary Theresa (Konarik) Griffith will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary Aug. 16 with a Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Family Parish church. The Griffiths were married Aug. 16, 1969, at Pilsen by Msgr. Arthur Tonne.

Among students selected to participate in the annual Kansas Masonic All-State High School Band are the following: Laura Hanes represented Advance Lodge 114 of Florence and Jodi Smith represented Centre Lodge 147 of Marion. The band played and marched during the annual Shrine Bowl East/West football classic.

Members of the Christian Youth Fellowship of Marion Christian Church spent July 24-30 in Mexico working at a mission. Garrett and Catie Varenhorst, Melissa and Sandy Mille, Justin Luna, Mark Engler, Amy Helmer, and Travis Hamm made the trip. Dan Baldwin, Ernie Luna, and Lori Tice went along as sponsors.

Sue Ehrlich is pictured this week with her entrance in the Marion County Record Produce Derby. Potatoes grown in her garden each weighed over a pound, with one weighing 1.5 pounds.

Instead of the annual Marion Chamber of Commerce picnic this summer, members this year will have the opportunity to visit Wichita Greyhound Park Aug. 28. They will travel on a chartered bus. The trip will begin at 3 p.m. and will cost $35 per person.
