Beginning Saturday, Marion, Florence, and Cottonwood Falls will no longer depend on mechanical switching in their telephone system central offices. Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. will cut the old mechanical equipment off, and turn on the new digital switches, sometime after 11 p.m. Friday in all three communities.

Marion's 15th annual Art in the Park will get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Marion High School cheerleaders for the fall semester are Angela Markley, Bonnie Hokanson, Courtney Goering Renee Goodin, Tosha Hendricks, and Jenny Groening. The most recent version of the Warrior mascot is Nick Voelker.

Tillie and Tony Schafers and Victor and Madonna Schafers celebrated their 40th wedding anniversaries Sept. 11 in Emporia. A family dinner and reception will be held at the American Legion hall.

The "Last Member Club" of the MHS class of 1927 met Sept. 11 at the Stone City Café. Noting they graduated 66 years ago, the group was pleased that 13 were able to be present.

Homecoming candidates at Marion High School are Danielle Longhofer, Pam Kruse, Charity King, Christian Vogel, Corey Darrow, and Matt Holub. Ceremonies will take place Friday at halftime of the Sacred Heart game.

Rebecca Richmond placed second in the six-year-old girl division of the state championship pedal pull Saturday at the Kansas State Fair. She and her family will spend Sept. 25 in Omaha, Neb., at the national pedal pull competition.
