SEPTEMBER 28, 1994

Marionites from as far away as California returned home Saturday to celebrate the 83rd annual Old Settlers' Day. Theme of the day was "Central Park Centennial, 1894-1994." The parade was lead by the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard who wore reproductions of 1870s era tack, weapons, and uniforms.

The Sept. 9-13 trip to Washington, D.C., for Marion County farmer Dan Holub was supposed to be about farm issues, but it turned into a brush with history. A light airplane crashed into the White House, piloted by a man despondent over his life. "There were lights, sirens, helicopters, everything," Holub said Thursday. "For a minute there, I though Haiti had invaded us." Holub sits on the National Grain Sorghum Producers operating board which met in Washington for meeting with legislators.

Kim Kreutziger has been selected as student of the month by Marion High School faculty members. She is the daughter of Donna and Warren Kreutziger of rural Marion, who operate Canada Bait and Tackle. Warren also works at Cooperative Grain and Supply.

Valley United Methodist Church celebrated its 125th anniversary with a special service, guest speakers from the past, and recognition of special members.

Kay Summervill and Lucas King were crowned queen and king Friday during homecoming ceremonies at the Marion High School football game against Remington. Marion shut out the Broncos 28-0 in front of a packed house despite cold weather.
