The morning dawned crisp and clear, and the welcome flags and Old Glory were fluttering in a gentle breeze Saturday to greet the 10,000 people gathered in Marion for the 85th annual Old Settlers' Day celebration.

A basic demonstration on how to use Internet will be offered at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Marion City Library.

Sherry Lynne Koop and Michel Wayne Soyez were married Aug. 17, 1996, in rural Marion.

Marion Country Club members were again pleased to have former residents and MHS alumni groups attend the Old Settlers' Day activities which included a "fun" golf tournament Friday afternoon and the open house at the club during the late afternoon and evening.

Many relatives visited at the home of Harold and Virginia Bowers over the Old Settlers' weekend and several activities were enjoyed, making it a very full weekend.

The following births were reported in the issue: Kyle Jacob, son of Mike and Jennifer Kelsey, Newton; Alexa Brianne, daughter of Monty and Debra (Rittgers) Thomas, Lebo; Tabitha Anne, daughter of David and Sandra Oborny, Marion; and Karyn Cecilia, daughter of Tom and Monica Leihy, Tampa.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Meisinger of Tulsa, Okla., were weekend guests of Leona Meisinger and Robert attended his 40th anniversary class reunion.

Nancy Seed of Santa Barbara, Calif., Florence Irene Gimson of Decatur, Ga., and Mary Lou Hammontree of Shawnee were Friday evening dinner guests of Bud and Jean Pierce.

Jeannine Bateman, Marion County Treasurer, has been elected secretary-treasurer of the North Central District of Kansas County Treasurer's Association.

Queen candidates for Centre High School's homecoming are Wendy Rudolph, Emily Belton, Nikki Bina and Michelle Hajek, King candidates are Mike Webb, Andre Ebaben, Josh Plett, and Martin Skytte.

City co-foreman Merle Bruner, who has been a City of Marion employee for the past 12 years, turned in his resignation which will be effective Jan. 1, 1997.
