Getting the biggest pumpkin seemed like a good idea to Centre Elementary School kindergartners, until they had to carry them out of the Jirak Brothers produce field. Class members Mary Adam, Aaron Bowman, Lance Diepenbrock, Savannah Forsberg, Shane Gantner, Megan Gutsch, Matthew Jirak, Brandy Kaiser, Daniel Klein, Edward Kohman, James Kohman, Alyssa Luna, and Brittany Owens used the trip Friday to learn how pumpkins grow, where the Jiraks send them, and how big they get (up to 140 pounds this year).

The annual bazaar at Hilltop Manor was held Saturday. Pearl Helmer held the winning ticket in the drawing for the American quilt.

Only one Marion High School runner advances to state this season. Kay Summervill finished fifth at the Mission Valley regional. The top three teams and the top 10 runners from each of four regionals advance to state.

Former Marion County Attorney Ed Wheeler started work Monday with the public defenders north central regional office, based in Salina. Wheeler took the job because it was an opportunity to explore a new position, he said.

Marion High School graduate Kelly Linnens has been hired as boys' basketball assistant coach.

King Royal Brothers Circus will hold two shows Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Marion. Tickets are available at Marion Municipal Building or at participating chamber members. Numerous acts will be featured.

The Cottonwood Crossing Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association will meet Nov. 3 in the Hillsboro Civic Center. About 40 members attended a picnic Oct. 4 in the ruts of the trail, on land near Durham owned by Dennis and Dorothy Youk. People attended from Marion, Hillsboro, Goessel, Lehigh, Roxbury, Lindsborg, McPherson, Canton, Inman, and Newton.

Soccer is popular around the world, and is growing in popularity with Marion youth. Marion-Florence REC is sponsoring weekend games which provide children exercise, teamwork, and something other than watching TV.
