Longtime Marion County Appraiser Max Hayen will resign effective Dec. 23. Marion County Commission accepted the resignation Monday at the regular weekly meeting. Hayen said he had not decided what he will do after his retirement, though he intends to continue working.

Holy Family Parish Church, Pilsen, was the setting Sept. 14 for the marriage of Brenda Kay Bina, daughter of Laverne and Harriet Bina, and Gavan Gregg Petersen, son of Gregg and Joan Petersen of Newton.

Forrest and Joyce Smith, Matt and Mary Kay Classen, Fern Friesen of Marion, and Earl and Lucy Janzen of Peabody, along with others from Kansas and Oklahoma, recently returned from an 18-day guided tour of Europe. They visited England, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Monaco, and France.

A rural Hillsboro farmhouse was burglarized sometime the final week of September, with the loss of four rifles and one shotgun, the Marion County Sheriff's Department reports.

An "end of the season:" picnic was hosted by Ryan Thomas on Saturday for the eighth grade football team and their coaches. Following outdoor recreation and games, hamburgers and other picnic fare were served by Gayle Thomas, assisted by Joni Crofoot. The hamburgers were grilled by coach Steve Janzen, Tod Gordon, and Jim Crofoot.

Centre Junior High instructors have chosen 13-year-old Greg Klenda as "student of the month." The eighth grade student is the son of Val and Julie Klenda who live northwest of Lincolnville.

Two persons were killed this past week in separate fatalities in Marion County. Jeffrey Pankratz, 26, of Goessel was killed Oct. 16 when the Builders Concrete and Supply cement truck he was driving overturned on U.S.-77. A Tabor College student, Jerry J. Jones, 24, of Golden, Colo., was killed early Sunday morning on 190th Street, about two miles east of Hillsboro when he was ejected from the truck, in which he was a passenger, went off the road, entered the north ditch, and struck an embankment.
