The first official sign of the holiday season each year in Marion is when city crews begin inspecting decorative lights on local businesses. The wear and tear of the past year usually results in replacing at least a few light bulbs on each building outlined with clear bulbs. During the past year, fewer bulbs were broken than normal, according to co-foreman Bob Schmidt of the city crew.
Seven Marion High School football players were named to 10 positions on Cottonwood Valley all-League teams. Senior Adam Collett, Junior Aaron Reiswig, and sophomore Bill Griffith each were named to two teams. Named to the first team were Collett as offensive guard, linebacker Reiswig at wide receiver, and defensive back, and Griffith as punter. Named second team were junior Jared Herzet at offensive tackle, Griffith at running back, and senior Chris Helmer at defensive end. Senior Corey Darrow earned honorable mention at defensive back.
More than 430 boys and girls attended the Harvest of Hope lock-in Friday night at Marion High School gymnasium. There were live bands, including two from McPherson that performed at 3:30 a.m. There were lots of games and plenty of food. "We've gone through 1,500 cans of pop so far," said Madelyn Vogel at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Marge and Mick Summervill have been selected as the recipients of the 1993 Marion County Extension Council Appreciation Award. The award is given to an individual couple or group that has been exceptional in their cooperation and support of the Marion County Extension Council educational programs.
Marion High School senior LeAnn Hiebert was selected as student of the month by the faculty. She is the daughter of Mary Alice and Roger Hiebert of rural Marion.
Paper plates were tempting targets to be caught by children and adults Saturday in downtown Marion. The "turkey toss" provided a variety of gifts and discounts to those lucky and skilled enough to grab a marked plate out of the air.
