Christmas shopping season was in full bloom Sunday afternoon in Marion. Friendly folks on both sides of the counters were enjoying the day by taking advantage of extended hours and avoiding a drive to metropolitan malls where hoodlums lurk in parking lots and random bullets fly.
Katrina Marie Swan, daughter of Paul and Kathy Swan of Marion, and Justin Wade Griffin, son of Sam and Diane Griffin of Burns, exchanged double ring wedding vows Oct. 9 at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Juanita Helmer will retire at the end of the year after serving 19 years as Deputy Clerk and Court Clerk in the Marion County judicial system.
Paula Johnson, of Marion, graduated from McPherson School of Practical Nursing in June. She was on the honor roll and attended school on the Morse Scholarship. After passing the Kansas State Board of Nursing examination, she has become a licensed practical nurse working at St. Luke Living Center.
For the 40th time, Burns residents under the sponsorship of the United Methodist Women headed to Lawrence Nov. 23 to bring back a contingent of international students. This year, because of threatening weather, the students spent an extra day in Burns. Host families welcomed the students in a variety of ways, while trying to make them feel at home, yet entertained as well.
