Sunflower Building, Inc. of Manhattan was the low bidder May 1 on the Marion County Courthouse improvement project. Total bid was $280,300 with 190 calendar days for completion. The bid includes an elevator, general accessibility improvements, new electrical system, and new construction and renovation in the courtroom.
Marion TOPS (Take Off Pounds Safely) Club is celebrating its first anniversary The club was organized May 13, 1993, with eight members. Its membership has grown steadily and currently stands at 25. Members represent a wide variety of ages.
Torey Hett of Marion participated in the Mid-America Games for the Disabled held over the weekend at Kansas City and brought home four blue ribbons. Torey won first place in his division in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, and slalom wheelchair races.
A number of Marion High School students placed in the Cottonwood Valley League math contest. Eric Byer placed first in algebra and first in word problems. Also placing first were Bailey Skiles in geometry and the geometry team. Those placing second were Chris Bowers, functions; Andy Methvin geometry; and Ethan Good, algebra equations.
Centre High School students took a trip to Chicago by plane to see a ball game and other events. They left Friday and returned Sunday night.
A 1929 caboose is the latest addition to the Florence Historical Society's holdings, and will be in place this summer at the Harvey House Museum in Florence. The society purchased the caboose from John Younkman of Newton a former resident of Florence. It was trucked in May 1 by Gerald Carpenter of Cedar Point.
