High winds Friday night across Marion County split a tree on the north side of Marion County Courthouse. A number of limbs were down throughout Marion, causing electrical outages in some parts of town. City crews worked through the weekend to repair damaged lines, while residents hauled a steady stream of limbs to the tree dump.
Alumni of Florence Memorial High School have established a $500 annual college scholarship. This year only, a graduate of Marion High School who is enrolled full-time for the 1998-97 school year may apply for the scholarship. Beginning next year, 1997, spring graduates of Marion High School will be advised of the scholarship so they may apply. The scholarship will be awarded each year at the annual banquet of Florence Memorial High School Alumni Association.
A housing addition proposed for Marion has received federal approval. The development will feature 16 duplexes. Each individual housing unit will have two or three bedrooms.
Longtime Girl Scout volunteers, Eugene Enos and Eileen Sieger, were honored Thursday by area Girl Scouts with a special "thank you" award.
Two boats sank within an hour of each other Sunday at Marion Reservoir in unrelated incidents. The three occupants of the first boat were wearing life jackets as were the two occupants in the second boat. All were treated at the scene by Marion County EMTs with one receiving further treatment at St. Luke Hospital.
Florence Middle School eighth grade students spent April 27 learning about life in the big city. The students, accompanied by teachers Missy Stubenhofer and Susan Reid, visited St. Louis, Mo., for the day. After flying into the city and riding public transportation from the airport, they saw the St. Louis Arch, and toured the area around it, including the courthouse. The students also took in a baseball game and ate lunch at Union Station.
