The summer of 1996 has been a pleasant surprise for everyone, especially Marion County farmers. Overall, according to Marion County Extension agent Steve Tonn, "from Burns on up to Tampa, we were blessed with an excellent month." Tonn explained that near-perfect weather conditions, low incidence of disease, and decreased insect damage led to higher-than-expected yields.
Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the post auxiliary, will sponsor a public political forum Tuesday at the post home on West Santa Fe Street in Marion. The forum will feature the three candidates for the office of sheriff: Ed Davies, Dan Harper, and Roy Houdyshell.
A come and go reception was held July 3 at the office of Morse, Batt, Brookens, and Collett in honor of Roger H. Morse, who is retiring after more than 50 years of law practice.
Officers of 20th Century Club hosted a party July 1 honoring Carolan McFarland whose marriage to Norman Funk occurred July 6. Hosting the party, which was held at the Rosse Case home, were Janice Case, Carolyn Moore, Elora Robinson, Helen Reznicek, and Lavonne Sharp.
The Marion club entered record books of Kiwanis International Monday when President Susan Robson gave birth to son Zachary. Longtime Kiwanian and former lieutenant governor Bud Hannaford said his research indicates this is the first time a club president has given birth to a child while in office.
Area students who earned academic honors during the spring semester at the University of Kansas include the following from Marion: Ashlee Loomis, senior in the college of liberal arts, and Lori Tice, senior in the school of fine arts.
Nationally renowned jazz trumpeter Mike Steinel will be the featured guest artist at Emporia State University's fifth annual gala benefit concert on Oct. 5 at Beach Music Hall Auditorium. The son of Conrad and Lois Steinel of Emporia, he is a graduate of Marion High School.
