Marion County Commissioners on Monday approve a preliminary plan for a shower hall at Marion County Lake, saying the long-term benefits were worth the possible $100,000 price tag. Construction could begin as soon as spring, if the county receives a state grant this winter.

Officials representing the City of Marion and Marion County Improvement District near Marion County Park and Lake will meet Thursday for final inspection of the pumping station which sends treated Marion water for use by residents of the lake community. The pump station is located near the city water tower on Eisenhower Drive.

The first-ever Marion County Relay for Life raised more than $9,000 Friday for the American Cancer Society.

Eugene Newfield of Peabody is proud of his Siberian tiger, who Sunday gave birth to four cubs. Not only is the tiger rare, it also is rare for them to give birth in captivity. There are two male and two female cubs.

Ramie Bina of Lincolnville is one of only 10 freshmen to receive a Friends University Presidential Scholarship, a four-year scholarship valued at $5,250 per year.
