2005-06 Sports Year in Review years ago

While the Marion High School sports season centered around the track team, which had its best performance at the state meet in 30 years, that doesn't mean the other Warrior teams had nothing to offer.

The MHS golf team had reason to smile all season. The young team hung around in every meet during the season. Freshman Luke Gordon won a tournament, Keith Jones finished in the top-10 at the league meet, and Jake Bredemeier earned his first trip to state. But it was junior Travis Hett, below, back row far right, who led the team in a big way becoming the first Warrior gofler to become state champion with a one-over 72 at the state meet.

Danielle Cope qualified for the cross country state meet for the second year in a row, taking 36th in a field of 101 runners.

Casey Nelson didn't just do it on offense for the football team by collecting 41 total tackles, but his 1,153 yards and 20 touchdowns as a running back are what helped the Warriors to their second straight league championship.

Pitcher Sonja Steinborn held the softball team together, picking up six of the team's seven victories on the mound.

Sophomore Charlie Holub qualified for his first state wrestling tournament. He joined seniors Casey Nelson and Gavin Moore at the meet, and helped MHS to one of its bests seasons ever.

Allie Maddox was once again a key player on the girls' basketball team averaging 15.7 points per game. Fellow senior Toni Gordon contributed 15.2 per game, as the duo attributed 65 percent of the team's scoring.

The volleyball team had its ups and downs during the season, but Lauren Helmer and the rest of the team never went down without a fight.

The baseball team saw highs and lows as well under first-year coach Shaun Craft, but David DeForest and the Warriors gave state-qualifier Marysville a run for its money in the first round of regionals.

Jason Hett and the Warriors boys' basketball team played with heart from the opening tip, despite winning just six games.

But it was senior Jeremy Vondenkamp and the boys' track team that stole the show. Vondenkamp was state champ in the 300-meter hurdles, and the boys' team was fifth. The girls' team recorded 8.5 points at the state meet.
