Remodeling of the county jail continued to be a topic of discussion at the Monday meeting of Marion County Commissioners. Debate on the matter has given away now to cooperative discussion of ways to meet the mandatory cost of remodeling to bring the facility up to correct standards while still maintaining the sturdy old building for use.

The Emporia State University a cappella choir will appear in concert Sunday at the Marion Municipal Auditorium. Three Marion students are choir members — Mrs. Norman Plenert, Steve Smith, and Van Kerns.

Thursday was an important day for the Eugene Waner family for their two oldest children were sworn into active duty with the U.S. Navy that day in Kansas City. Mr. and Mrs. Waner were present for the ceremony to see Teresa Beth and Jerald Eugene take the oath.

Coast Guard Gunner's Mate First Class Terence Holub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Holub of Marion, recently participated in a search and rescue mission off the coast of South Carolina. They towed the disabled sailing ship, "Andiamo," 195 miles to port in Norfolk. The Andiamo had lost her sails in heavy weather.

Gail Regier and Mrs. J.C. Ehrlich and Carol drove to Topeka Thursday where the girls were to page for Senator Crofoot. Mrs. Ehrlich had the misfortune to slip on ice and break her ankle. The girls took her to Axtell Hospital in Newton where they performed surgery on Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers and three of their children took cake and Jell-O to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Bowers and Ben Friday evening to help Mary Beth celebrate her birthday.

Marion County Lake board held its first meeting of the new year Jan. 15 at Kingfisher's. Board members present were Chairman Albert Klenda, Vic Herbel, Dr. John Slifer, Henry Loveless, County Commissioner Ed Broz, and Lake Superintendent Dale Snelling.
