Work will be completed in August on the flood control protection project around Marion now under construction. That announcement was made this week by the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

Wayne Colle, Farm Bureau Insurance agency manager, recently received a traveling plaque awarded him for sales efforts and participation in the manpower program. The South Central District Agency Manager Leadership Award is given each month to one of 14 agency managers in the district who is judged to have done the most outstanding works in sales and manpower for that month.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Moran and Elly left by train Tuesday to spend Christmas in Chicago with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Barta.

Winners in a Christmas decorating contest in Florence were Maxine Robinson and Mr. and Mrs. Barry Linnens, first; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Huntley and Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Creamer, second; and Mr. and Mrs. Junior Grimmett and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hansen, third. Dale's Rexall Drug won first place in decorated businesses.

Leslie W. Suderman, well-known Marion County farmer, was named to the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee by delegates to the Dec. 19 ASC county convention at the Owl Car Café. Delegates also elected Russell Hett and Larry Jost as first and second alternates to the committee. Oliver Unruh was re-elected chairman and Edmund Steiner was re-elected vice chairman.

Four area students were among the 351 Emporia State University students who received degrees Dec. 23 during fall graduation exercises. They are Clair Lynn Fruechting, bachelor's degree in business; Carol Ann Holt, bachelor's degree in education; and Brenda Jo Soyez, bachelor's degree in education, all of Marion, and Margaret Ann Wiebe, master's degree in library science, Hillsboro.
