Highway U.S.-56 between Marion and Hillsboro has been closed three days during the past two weeks due to snow storms and drifting. "Tubing" isn't found in the dictionary, but kids of all ages may be found enjoying that sport nearly any afternoon on the slopes of the dike surrounding the west side of Marion. Old tractor tubes, plastic sheets, or any type of sled are used to coast down the slope of the dike, then trudge to the top and do it all over again.
Marion High School drama students recently have won many awards. They include Jackie Richmond, Tony Turk, Donita Makovec, Janelle Bowers, Donna Stovall, Laurie Laubhan, Sandy Bridges, Beth Regier, Ron Wineinger, Gary Ehrlich, Jerry Elmore, David Bryant, and Jandee Smith. Their coach is Jim McPheeters.
Representative Pascal Roniger sponsored four high school students as legislative pages last week. Pictured with Gov. Robert Bennett are Jerry Winkley, Ron Wineinger, and Karen Stevens and Clayton Childs of Elmdale.
It's now Lieutenant Jack Adams. The former Marionite has been promoted by the Kansas Highway Patrol and assigned to Hays. Adams, 46, is an 18 1/2 year veteran of the KHP. For the past six years he has been a sergeant on the Turnpike Patrol stationed at El Dorado. Prior to that he was stationed at McPherson. He is the son of Mrs. John Adams of Marion and the late Mr. Adams.
Lori Schmidtberger of Marion and Rosanne Richardson of Kinsley (formerly of Marion) recently were elected to offices in Novum Morse Hall on the Emporia State University campus. Schmidtberger was chosen as judicial board representative and Richardson as a co-adviser.
