Commander David R. Montgomery, USN, has been installed as commanding officer of the USS George Washington Carver, nuclear submarine. The ceremony and change of command took place May 25 at New London, Conn. Commander Montgomery is the son of Dave Montgomery of Marion and the late Ruth Montgomery, highly regarded former teacher in the Marion school system.
Three members of the class of '73-'74 will participate in the Tri-County Junior Miss finals for the right to represent the community in state competition. They are Melinda Collett and Angie Smith of Centre High School and Renda Thompson, Marion High School.
Dr. Linda Loney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Loney of Marion, has accepted a position as chief resident physician at St. Louis Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. A pediatrician, Loney will assume her new duties June 26.
Two members of the Marion High School chapter of Future Farmers of America attended the National FFA Leadership Conference this past week in Washington, D.C. Ron Wineinger and Brad Herbel, MHS sophomores, arrived in Washington June 5 for the five day conference. Herbel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Herbel and Wineinger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wineinger.
Dennis Schafers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Schafers of Marion, graduated May 21 from Washburn University, Topeka. Schafers graduated from the Department of Nursing with a bachelor of science degree. He is employed at Menninger Foundation, Topeka.
