It got underway almost two weeks later than normal, but the 1978 wheat crop promises to be one of the best in the past three or four years in both yield and quality, according to Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service director Ed Stenzel.
Bob Brookens, a native of Westmoreland, has decided to establish his law practice in Marion. Brookens graduated from the University of Kansas in 1972 with a degree in music. He taught music for two and a half years in Crawford County before entering law school at Washburn University. He expects to begin his law practice July 31 after taking the Kansas bar examination.
Col. John B. Corbisiero has been awarded an oak leaf cluster to his Legion of Merit, earning the Air Force's fifth highest medal for his work while director of Test and Deployment at Hanscome AFB, Mass. Col. Corbisiero, originally a command pilot, has earned numerous decorations. He is the husband of the former Aileen Moffitt of Tampa.
It was reminiscent of early Kansas when six Santa Fe riders stopped Friday morning at the farm of Amelia Smith, near Durham, to water their horses. They began their trip at Independence, Mo., and will complete it in Santa Fe. N.M. This group has its base in Riverton, Wyo.
Individual players got a chance to compare their talents with those of their regular season foes this past Saturday as Marion hosted the Cottonwood Valley League throw, hit, and run contest, sponsored by French's Mustard. Marion players finished first or second in five of the six divisions. Mike Kelsey placed first in the 10-year-old division; Chris Webb and Mike Bina finished 1-2 in the 11-year-old division; Randy Kelsey was second in the 12-year-old division; Doug Regnier captured first for 13-year-olds; Greg Boyle finished first in the 14-year-old division. Marion players failed to place only in the 15-year-old class.
