To make Marion's directional signs as fresh and colorful as the city they point to, Troy Bridges, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bridges, is painting the sign at the intersection of Third Street and U.S.-50. Bridges said he would paint two signs in bright red, white, and blue.
Two Marion churches, whose beginnings reach back to the early days of Marion Centre, joined for a holiday celebration Sunday morning in Central Park. Approximately 140 Valley United Methodists and First Presbyterians worshipped and picnicked together for the third consecutive year, a renewal of friendship between two congregations that had their births in the early 1870s. Several at the picnic were descendants of charter members.
Charles Stenzel experienced a narrow escape Friday afternoon when he was caught in a shower of rain while he was combining wheat. Coming down the road which slants as it approaches the Mud Creek bridge, the combine started to skid and Charles couldn't hold it. It rolled over the bridge into the water and landed upside down with Charles under the combine and in the water. He worked himself out with no injuries except stiffness.
Although stands were few in number Saturday, the farmers' market sponsored by Marion Chamber of Commerce brought delight in the form of fresh produce to many.
Merle Douglas of Marion caught a 38-pound flathead June 23 at Cottonwood Falls dam, using worms for bait. He has caught five flatheads this year, ranging from 18 to 38 pounds.
Jo Marie Mueller and Michael O'Dell exchanged double ring marriage vows June 17 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.
