Sheriff June Jost received a plaque Friday from the National Child Safety Council. The award was to recognize the sheriff's efforts in the safety education of children in Marion County. Sheriff Jost says the child safety program has operated in Marion for at least nine years.
Herbert E. Meier, son of Jacob Meier of Marion, has been named president and chief executive officer of Sheplers, Inc. Sheplers is the world's largest western store. The headquarters is at the store on West Kellogg in Wichita. Other stores are located at Oklahoma City, Denver, and Dallas.
Three of the 16 members of the Emporia State University Madrigal Singers selected recently come from Marion. They are Rosie Plenert of Marion, Cheryl Robinson of Florence, and Jayma Stotts of Hillsboro. Plenert is secretary-treasurer of the group and Robinson will be librarian.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Siebert had the misfortune to lose a valuable cow last week when it was struck by lightning during the rain storm which gave most of the area an inch of rain.
Marion High School senior Bev Bezdek was chosen as homecoming queen. Escorted by Michael Fruechting, Bezdek was crowned by last year's queen, Terri Robinson.
Robin Hagans, 22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagans of Overland Park, was seriously injured in an automobile accident Saturday north of Lincolnville. Diana Case, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Case Jr. of Marion, driver of the car, escaped serious injury. Roberta Gregwire, 21, of Salina, also was a passenger in the car. The three girls were on their way to Marion from Manhattan where they are students at Kansas State University.
Col. John Corbisiero, husband of the former Aileen Moffitt of Tampa, has been named Chief of the Strategic Division, Simulator System Program Office, at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
