More than 6 to 10 inches of snow fell this past week on what was already on the ground. Temperatures ranged from zero to 14 below most of the week, with blowing winds. It closed roads and activity has been at a standstill.
Western Alfalfa Corporation is planning to sell its alfalfa mill on the northwest edge of Marion at public auction Feb. 14. The mill began operating in Marion in the early 1940s under the ownership of the W.J. Small Company of Neodesha. An important industry to the Marion community for many years, its closing was announced in the fall of 1979.
The Ol' Thing is kind of proud of herself, and must brag a bit. It was nothing new to be selected, again this year, as one of the "Blue Ribbon" newspapers by the National Newspaper Foundation. But when she discovered that only two weeklies in Kansas made it, she really beamed — and thinks she's in mighty good company with the Osawatomie Graphic.
Jeff Brewer received the first place trophy as Queen of the Groundhog Weekend festivities. He earned the trophy by audience applause at the contest Saturday afternoon.
Sally Ferguson Helmer and Roger Hannaford III wish to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. A June 2 wedding is planned.
Ron Wineinger earned a first place Saturday in the South Central Kansas FFA public speaking contest at Chaparral High School in Anthony. He and seven other members of the Marion Florence Chapter of Future Farmers of America took part in the contest. Others participating were Brad Vannocker, Debbie Hett, Sandy Carr, Steve Gayle, Janelle Bowers, Rod Just, and Rick Siebert.
Patti Forsyth and Sylvia Moravec, RNs, have completed a two-week coronary care course for nurses given by the American Heart Association at Wichita.
Queen of the Courts candidates are Marion High School students Janelle Bowers, Annette Nienstedt, and Cindy Bernhardt. The queen will be announced between games Friday in Marion Gymnasium, where Marion High School will face Chase County.
