Bill Meyer, editor of the Marion County Record, was re-elected to a five-year term on the board of trustees of the William Allen White Foundation at the annual meeting Friday at the University of Kansas.
The Luta Creek bridge sustained damage to its concrete railings Monday when a Kansas State Highway Department high loader rammed the Main Street landmark. The driver told Chief of Police Ken Hoffman the steering gear malfunctioned, making the heavy piece of equipment unsteerable. The bridge is owned by the highway department.
At the Red Cross Bloodmobile's visit to Marion Feb. 7 one-gallon donor pins were given to Ruth Lange, Shirley Bowers and Margaret Tice. Giving blood for the first time were John Slifer, John Carr, Jandee Smith, Donita Makovec, Lori Kelsey, Ken Hoffman, Kathy Sandwell, Rodney Holub, Frances White, Stephen White and Randy Hardey.
King Doug Heerey crowned Queen of the Courts, Annette Nienstedt, between the B-team game, which the Warriors won, 69-58, and the varsity game when the Warriors also defeated Chase County, 80-51. Lighting the way for the Queen of Courts candidates and their escorts were candle girls Jandee Smith and Renda Thompson, who formed the point of a candle-lighted heart on the basketball court. The heart was formed by members of the pep club.
City employees held a surprise retirement party on Friday for former Chief of Police Lyle Sanders. City employees also wished Sanders a happy retirement by flashing a message on the Marion Cablevision weather channel.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Forsyth of McPherson announce the engagement of their daughter Patti to Tom Thomas, son of Virginia Thomas of Wichita and Dave Thomas of Marion. The couple will be married June 9 in Valley United Methodist Church, Marion.
The eight candidates for homecoming king and queen at Centre are Janelle Albrecht, Theresa Alvarez, Karen Ecklund, Rose Kristek, Doug Beneke, Jim Costello, Phil Peterson and Keith Wirtz.
