Sgt. Oscar Becker is retiring from the Kansas Highway Patrol. His position as supervisor of troopers in this area will be assigned to Sgt. William Whitenack, a native of Olathe. Becker has been supervisor of troopers in McPherson, Marion and Chase counties since 1965.

Marion High School Warriors stepped onto the pinewoods Friday at Center High School and claimed the right to wear the Cottonwood Valley League championship crown. Marion won the game 63-50. Final CVL standings are: 1. Marion Warriors, 6-1; 2. Centre Cougars, 5-3; 2. Council Grove Braves, 5-3; 3. Herington, 3-4; 4. Chase County Bulldogs, 0-8.

Rhonda Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Williams of Florence, is a member of the newly-formed "Stingers," Emporia State University's pompon squad that performs at Hornet athletic events.

Matthew Classen, president of Marion National Bank, was named president of the Marion County Bankers Association at the group's quarterly meeting Thursday night. He succeeds Ed Costello of the Tampa State Bank. Robert Spachek of Pilsen State Bank, Lincolnville, was elected secretary-treasurer.

Rolling in a rock 'n' roll benefit jamboree at Mid-America Nursing Center last Wednesday were five energetic wheelchair rollers. They and about 20 rockers earned more than $370 for the Marion County Heart Association. Wheelchair rollers were Arnold Rindt, Mary Giesbrecht, Ellen Edmunds, Clara Mohn and Anna Helmer.

Betty Laue and Harvey Sanders, both of Marion, wish to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. The wedding is being planned for March 17.

No doubt you have heard on TV and in the papers of the slaying of U.S. Ambassador in Afghanistan. But none realized how close to home it touched. Adolph Dubs, 58-year-old ambassador was a second cousin of Ruth Heiser of Ramona and first cousin of her mother Lydia Skibbe of Marion. His funeral was Tuesday in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
