Stephanie Voth of Goessel strained at the spelling of gnat. Melissa Krispense, a Florence Middle School sixth grade student, didn't even swallow hard. After correctly spelling gnat, Melissa won the Marion County Spelling Bee in spelling eyeful. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Krispense of rural Marion. Linda Robinson of Florence will join Stephanie as county alternate. Linda got wrapped up in ermine. She left off the final "e". Melissa will represent the county at the State Spelling Bee April 28 at Washburn University, Topeka.

The Marion County Historical Society has undertaken the project of bringing up to date the book containing photographs of former county officials. The book will be on display in the lobby of the courthouse. Mrs. Ralph Melton, Mrs. John Wheeler, Mrs. W.H. Carpenter and Mrs. Alex Case Sr. are in charge of the project.

Staff Sergeant Kenneth R. Schmidt Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schmidt of Marion, has graduated from the Tactical Air Command leadership school for noncommissioned officers at Seymour Johnson AFB near Goldsboro, N.C. A nuclear weapons technician, Sgt. Schmidt was training in military management and supervision. He is a 1967 graduate of Marion High School.

The Hillsboro team captured the town team championship in a seven team basketball tournament over the weekend at Marion Gymnasium. Members of the team are Ron Friesen, Stan Schmidt, Tim Kaufman, Butch Schlesener, Roger Peters, Tim Wasemiller and Jim Hamm. They beat Lincolnville 78-52 in the final game Sunday night.

The names of six vocal music students from Marion High School will be included in the 1978-79 Who's Who in Music, according to Jeff Brewer, vocal music director. Laurie Laubhan, Janelle Bowers, Donita Makovec, Bill Hoch, Doug Heerey and Jay Smith will be on the list.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tajchman, Marion, are the parents of a daughter, Alesha Lynn, born March 24 at Bethel Hospital, Newton. The baby weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 19 inches long.
