Betty Grimwood is pictured on the front page accepting a plaque of commendation from KU Chancellor Gene Budig honoring the people of Burns who have been Thanksgiving weekend hosts for 375 KU foreign students since 1954. Grimwood and her husband, Ed, have coordinated the activity sponsored by the United Methodist Church in Burns.
Zion Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, was the setting for the wedding on May 1 of Laurie Laubhan and Tom Koslowsky. The Rev. Fred Lammert of Winfield, retired Lutheran minister, performed the double ring ceremony at 7 p.m.
Daniel Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers of Marion, won top individual honors at the Kansas FFA poultry contest held recently at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
The Tourism Bash, annual party to celebrate completion of a series of card games to raise funds for promotion of the tourist industry locally, was held Friday night. Winners in the series were announced as follows: Bridge — Mr. and Mrs. Ed Costello, first place; Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Classen, second. Pinochle — Mr. and Mrs. Bill Slusser first; Mr. and Mrs. Alden Slusser, second.
Roger Wilson led the Marion High School boys' track team to a first place victory at the Cottonwood Valley League track and field meet Friday at Council Grove. The Marion girls, led by freshman Leann Snelling, also edged their way into a first place finish. It was the first time in over a decade that Marion won both girls' and boys' league championships.
Two busloads of Senior Citizens of Tampa enjoyed a trip to Burlington Friday and had a tour of the Wolf Creek generating station. They also visited other places of interest and en route home stopped at Emporia to tour the Wonder Bread bakery.
Susan Higgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Higgins of Marion, has placed fifth in the nation as a rifle marksman. Susan is a member of the Eastern New Mexico University all-women rifle team which recently competed at the annual Fiesta Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.
