About 50 Girl Scouts and leaders turned out Monday night to honor Phyllis Enos as she was presented with the Girl Scouts of America 'Thanks" badge, the highest honor an adult can receive in the organization. The presentation took place at a group meeting at Kingfisher's Inn of the five Marion Scout troops.

Marion High School vocational agriculture students spent Saturday constructing a 24x36-foot steel building between Florence and Cedar Point, as part of the World Impact program. Students included Tate McCarty, Todd Siebert, Tim Richmond, Joe Graham Jr., Terry Olsen, Kevin Robinson, Doug Kjellin, Monte Dalke, Matt Wineinger, Judy Hansen, Julian Seaman and Brenda Ellis.

Bill Hoch, a student at the William Allen White School of Journalism on the Lawrence campus of the University of Kansas, will serve as an intern on the news staff of the Marion County Record this summer.

The first accidental drowning in the 42-year history of Marion County Lake was recorded Saturday. The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. when the victim, Steven W. Gallup, 22, of Egan, Ill, reportedly swam out of the beach area to retrieve a wayward-floating innertube. Sheriff's officers speculated that the victim became entangled in the heavy moss outside the swimming area.

Sixteen children from the Centre school district received their diplomas from the Lincolnville Cooperative Pre-School during ceremonies Tuesday morning at a Herington restaurant. Members of the class were Becky Bina, Lori Bina Ramie Bina, Jeannea Falen, Danelle Hanschu, Chris Hansen, Spencer Hedstrom. Elizabeth Jost, Tori Kahns, Dale Klenda, Jolinda Kristek, Patti Nordstrom, Timmy Olsen, Meggan Silhan, Jamie Steiner and Terry Steiner.

Mary Kay Waner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Waner of Marion, graduated Sunday with a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Marymount College, Salina. She will be employed by Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Kansas Attorney General Robert "Bob" Stephan will deliver the commencement address Tuesday when 44 seniors graduate from Marion High School.
