D.W. Montgomery, agent for William Scully in Marion County since 1949, will retire Friday after 30 years in the Scully Estate Office here. Forrest L. Smith will assume management and replace Montgomery as agent after spending 25 years as assistant in the Scully Office at Marion.
Marion County Sheriff June Jost was disarmed and detained for almost an hour last Wednesday by a Wichita policeman. Jost was in Wichita awaiting results of autopsies on murder victims, John Morgan and Lovella Becker of Goessel. He was walking to a convenience store when the patrolman stopped him and inquired where he thought he was going with "that gun." It took identification by Sedgwick County Sheriff Johnny Darr to secure his release.
Debbie Kreutzman won first place Saturday in the Tiddly Winks tournament in Marion. Serious competitors for the championship included Robin Summervill, Kendall Whitley, Scott Heidebrecht, and Bill Meyer.
Chris Costello defeated Steve Moore in a sudden death playoff Monday to capture the championship round of the Marion Country Club Memorial Day invitational golf tournament. At the end of regulation play, they were tied with identical scores of 73. Don Bredemeier and Rosse Case fired identical scores of 75, but Bredemeier won the playoff to take third place.
Valedictorian of the Marion High School Class of 1979 is Doug Heerey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heerey. Pat Fruechting, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Fruechting was named salutatorian. Heerey and Fruechting also were named outstanding senior boy and outstanding senior girl.
Several longtime teachers in Marion County were honored recently by the University of Kansas School of Education. Those from Marion who received award for 25 years of service included Lois Anderson, first grade teacher at Bown-Corby School; Eugene Enos, principal of Marion Elementary and Bown-Corby Schools; and Ruth Pankratz, fifth grade teacher at Marion Elementary School.
