Making the best of a dry weekend, Marion County farmers blazed through once-soggy fields to cross the halfway point in the 1982 harvest. Overall yields look good. There have been reports of from 30 to 45 bushels per acre in varying areas of the county. The average county yield is from 32 to 35 bushels per acre, according to Ken Springer, Marion County Agricultural Extension Agent.
Terry Holt, park ranger at Marion Lake, was named "Ranger of the Year" June 25 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District. Holt was cited for exceptional achievements in developing water and hunting safety programs at Marion Lake.
Don W. Hodson, M.D., a family practice physician, will open his office at St. Luke Medical Clinic July 19 in Marion. He and Dr. Jeff Martin, also a family practice specialist, will share the responsibility of maintaining regular hours at Florence Medical Clinic.
DuWayne Suffield of Lincolnville attended the Bethel College music camp from June 6 through 11. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Suffield, DuWayne will be a junior at Centre High School this fall.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Siebert drove to Newton Thursday evening and while they were gone from home someone came in and helped themselves to Mrs. Siebert's riding horse. The animal was found in a field south of town Sunday morning with every indication of having been ridden and ridden hard.
Mrs. Earl (Lola) Kreuter, 85, a civic, business, and church leader in the community for more than half a century, died July 4. Mrs. Kreuter was vice president and personnel officer of Marion Nation Bank and held that position until her retirement in 1963.
Sheriff's officers and park rangers were summoned to French Creek Cove at Marion Lake Monday evening after they received word that a man was firing a pistol at water skiers. The incident, reported at 5:30 p.m. turned out to involve a territory dispute between a fisherman and his family and three families of boaters and water skiers from Hutchinson. The man accused of firing the shots told officers he had become incensed with the skiers who were stirring up the water near his family's fishing lines.
