The hot and dry weather is still with us and the maize and milo crops are really beginning to suffer.
For the second year in a row the Marion County Record has won first place in its division in the Newspaper Typography Awards competition sponsored by Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services of Los Angeles, Calif.
The big rocks on the hillside about three miles west of Marion, formerly outlining "Diamond Ranch," the name of Rex Siebert's ranch, were changed to form the name of a popular thirst-quenching beverage. Siebert said, commenting on the sign, "Some kids were probably just having fun."
Copper craftsmanship and a picnic in Central Park were enjoyed by about 70 Chamber of Commerce members Friday evening. Ernest Hett and his wife Lucille provided the evening's entertainment with a tour of The Copper Shed at their home east of Aulne.
Marion High School's football Warriors have been tagged the team to beat in the upcoming 1978 Cottonwood Valley League season. Centre, Herington, Chase County, and Council Grove round out the predicted order of finish in the pre-season poll.
Seventeen youngsters attended the second annual Kids' Fishing Derby at the Marion County Lake Saturday sponsored by the Marion Lake Association. Winner with 3 pounds 1 ounce of fish was Kama Buckley. Second place was won by Leann Snelling with 13 ounces of fish. Third was taken by Dean Snelling with 10 ounces. All three are from the Marion County Lake area. Contestants came from Wichita, Newton, Hillsboro, Lincolnville, Marion, and Danville.
Teammates Steve Moore and Bernard Waner defeated Jack Summerville and Jerry Higgins by three strokes Sunday in the "best ball" tournament at Lindsborg Country Club. The Marion golfers all were in the championship flight.
