A quiet business located in Marion will grow silent this week. Established two years ago by a group of local investors, Marion Research and Ecology, Ltd., is being liquidated; the worm has turned, downward. Gerry Harris, Bud Hannaford, Bud Pierce, Jack Regnier, and Leland Heidebrecht had hoped to saddle an industry-trumpeted sweepstakes of profits and ride it to its zenith. Results proved to be disappointing.
FFA Sweetheart contestants and their escorts were presented during half-time of the Marion-Moundridge football game. Contestants were Neletha Nelson, Carla Jost, Janice Wiens, Lori Hett, Julie Hett, Elaine Nuss, Debbie Hett, and Kelly Brenzikofer. Escorts included Mike Moore, John McGuire, Joe Dvorak, Gary Williams, Brad Vannocker, Roger Maag, Bruce Williams, Ron Woerz, and Jerry Shipman. Donna Stovall, 1977 Sweetheart, then introduced Debbie Hett, 1978 Sweetheart.
Randall E. Steinert, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Steinert of Tampa, will represent the Emporia State University student body on the ESU alumni association's board of directors. Steinert is an ESU senior majoring in accounting. He is employed as an assistant to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at ESU.
Pearl and Ernest Break of Florence reigned as king and queen of square dancing Thursday evening at the Marion City Squares dance in the basement of the city building. The Breaks were observing their 53rd wedding anniversary and led the promenade of partners. They have been square dancing together for more than 60 years.
Centre High School will present the musical, "The Music Man" Sept. 6. Parts will be played by David Mueller, Marlene Dvorak, Melinda Collett, Stan Wyatt, Dawn Gutsch, Tom Remy, Tom Costello, Randy Hamm, Jane Forsberg, Gayla Gutsch, Debbie Deines, Jerry Klein, Doug Beneke, Mike Rogers, Randy Cain, Phil Peterson, Ginger Edmonson, Rose Kristek, Cerita Konecny, Joyce Noone, Tom Triggs, Cindy Bentz, Mike Broce, Jackie Nowak, Jamie Smith, Jeri Zinn.
