Mayor Peggy Blackman is traveling around Kansas this week, judging other communities for the PRIDE program. This is the week that 57 Kansas communities who have successfully completed the 1979 PRIDE year will have the opportunity to show and share their year's accomplishment. Five two-member judging teams will be ushered around the state to evaluate and decide on those communities which are most deserving of 1979 PRIDE cash awards.
Larry L. Reiswig, Farmers and Drovers National Bank, Marion, attended the 35th annual session of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from Aug. 12 to 25.
Main Street honored one of its most ardent supporters Monday when Mrs. R.R. (Phyllis) Melton was named "Woman of the Year" by the Business and Professional Women's Club. Town historian, star gazer, supporter of the arts and numerous community organizations, Mrs. Melton has lived within sight of Main Street all her life.
Louis Larsen grew a whopper of a Sunflower on his farm near Aulne. He had one seed in his pocket while planting watermelons last spring, stuck it in the ground. The big buster was the only sunflower he grew, but it measures 14 inches across the seed-filled pool without the petals.
Three area girls have completed secretarial courses at Brown Mackie College, Salina. They are Barb Vinduska, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Florian Vinduska of rural Marion; Francie Klenda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Klenda of Lincolnville, and Cindy (Mrs. Alan) Mueller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Jirak of Lincolnville.
Anna Costello was guest of honor at a picnic Sunday evening at the Ed Costello home in celebration of her 91st birthday. Others present were Ted Lewis and Pat, Florence Scanlan, and Sharon Costello, Wichita; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bergkamp, Pretty Prairie; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Costello, Jim and Jan, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hajek, Joan and Diane; and Mamie Paterson, Tampa; and Mickey Costello.
