Marion City Commission members voted against asking the county to consider an additional one cent sales tax when the issue was discussed Monday.
Mark E. Arnold, 24, and Robert L. Reid, 20, are charged with aggravated robbery, a class B felony, and three counts of kidnapping, also class B felonies. The two men are accused of stealing $6,871 from the Ramona bank during an armed robbery. Three bank employees, Neva Applegate, Linda Beltz and Sylvia Bezdek, who were on duty at the time, were forced into a room following the robbery.
Members and their out-of-town guests are invited to the annual Old Settlers' Day dance at Marion County Club. Don Kile of Emporia will provide instrumental music. Mr. and Mrs. Darryl Woodson are chairmen.
Area residents exhibiting at the Abilene Trail Days Festival Saturday include Les and Celia Byer, Marion, who will exhibit stoneware and porcelain pottery; Donita Ryff, Ramona, soft toys and crafts; and Kenneth and Margie Nienstedt, Marion, "photo fun," barnwood frames, and handmade puzzles.
Ken Springer, agriculture extension agent for Marion County, received the Kansas Agriculture Extension Association's achievement award Sept. 14 at the 67th annual meeting of the National Association of Agriculture Agents held in Billings, Mont.
The Pilsen CYO is sponsoring a Bike-a-thon on Sunday. Proceeds go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Tennessee.
Christine Laue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sanders and a fifth grader at Marion Elementary School, has been recognized by the Weekly Reader magazine. Last year, while a fourth grader, she entered an assignment in Chris Koehn's classroom for the Weekly Reader News Parade. The article she wrote appeared in the Sept 17, 1982, Weekly Reader and was concerned with problems fourth graders have at school.
At their Sept. 13 meeting, members of the KanzAton Junior Club voted to buy three redbud trees for the East Park CIP project. KanzAton started the project and encourages others to also help make Marion more beautiful in this way.
