City employees took advantage of favorable weather Monday to prepare for the Christmas grand opening the afternoon of Nov. 26 and put up holiday decorations on utility poles along Main Street.
Marion students attending the 12th annual Kansas State High School Model United Nation at Emporia State University Nov. 1 were Janelle Bowers, Pat Fruechting, Bill Hoch, Annette Nienstedt, Renda Thompson, Donita Makovec, Jane Johnson, Brenda Friesen, Chuck Gough, Kevin Wilson, Doug Heerey, Donna Stovall, Troy Bridges, Barry Allen, Tony Turk, Margie Kerns, and Anke Blattmann.
Loyd Savage and his sons Rex and Ray helped guide a pilot of light airplane, and his three passengers, lost in low-hanging clouds, to a safe landing. They called Marion County Sheriff's office and Sheriff June Jost and Kansas Highway Patrolman Ken Monroe were dispatched to the area. The Savages coordinated a rescue plan whereby Jost and Monroe used their flashing lights to direct the pilot to Newton Airport.
St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church was filled to near capacity for Mass offered at 3 p.m. Sunday, beginning an afternoon and evening celebration which marked 25 years of service to the parish by Monsignor Arthur J. Tonne.
All 13 MHS vocalists, who auditioned for district choir, were selected to participate in the elite ensemble. Those chosen included sopranos Laurie Laubhan, Eva Sassenscheidt, Julie Hett, and Linda Schaffer; altos Janelle Bowers, Lori Hett, and Sherri Kelly; tenors Chuck Gough, Greg Boyle, and Paul Loney, and basses Bill Hoch, Jay Smith, and Brian Bowers.
