DECEMBER 6, 1978

For the first time since September, motorists can travel between Marion and Florence without suffering the jarring potholes of the old Quarry Road. U.S.-77 opened to traffic Tuesday. The eight-mile stretch required longer to complete due to cold weather stifling the heater-remix machine used to prepare the highway surface for application of a layer of shredded tire carcasses. Heated and re-combined with asphalt and kerosene, the 100,000 tires formed a mixture that created a stress-absorbing interlayer between the conventional road materials.

Marion Warrior senior halfback Casey Case has had another honor bestowed on him for his outstanding performance during the 1978 football season. Case was named Sunday to the Salina Journal all area first team. Only 12 players were picked for the first team.

Keith Collett, a graduate student from Marion, performed in Kansas State University's opera presentation Thursday in McCain Auditorium. Collett played the part of David in Samuel Barber's opera "A Hand of Bridge." He also appeared as Count Almaviva in "Marriage of Figaro." Collett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collett of rural Marion and a 1972 graduate of Centre High School.

Three former Marion County District Court employees were honored during a brief ceremony held in the courtroom Tuesday morning. Associate Judge Edwin G. Westerhaus presented fold pins recognizing the service of former Probate Judge Henry F. Loveless and his wife, Edith, who served as deputy clerk. Herbert Hett also was recognized for his services as court bailiff for the past 10 years.

Seven Boy Scouts and their scoutmaster John Jordan enjoyed camping from Friday through Sunday on land north of Marion owned by Vern Magathan. The boys hiked to the Chingawassa Springs area and worked on merit badges and skill awards. Those camping were Danny Horsch, Myles Zeller, Mike Jordan, Jeff Conyers, Jeff Harris, Chris Meierhoff, and Monte Dalke.
