Ron Wineinger of Marion was elected governor of American Legion Boys' State during the past week at Lawrence as high school juniors from across Kansas gathered for the annual affair. Wineinger, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wineinger, defeated Brad Russell of Topeka in the race. He is the first Marion representative — and for that matter — the first small town representative — in recent memory to be elected governor, said Chuck Nelson, a Boys' State official in Lawrence.
The old Lincolnville school building stands in ruins after an early Sunday fire. No one was injured in the blaze as firefighters from Lincolnville, Marion, Herington and Lost Springs kept flames from spreading to nearby residences. Owners of the building, Lloyd and Mark Pagenkopf, estimated damage to the building, which housed National Tri Products, at $10,000.
Julie Bina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bina of rural Marion, has completed a course at the National Aquatic School on the campus of the University of Kansas at Lawrence.
Cerita Konecny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Konecny of Lincolnville, represented Marion County at the Farm Bureau citizenship seminar held last week at Rock Springs Ranch north of Herington.
Eloise Mueller of Marion has been promoted to vice president at Tip Top Credit Union in Hillsboro.
The winner of the Marion County open golf tournament held Monday at the Marion Country Club was Don Bredemeier who took top honors in the championship flight with a score for 78.
